Elbow pain

Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and other elbow tendon pain typically build slowly. It starts as an ache after activity, then becomes pain gripping, carrying or turning a doorhandle.

What tends to cause it

Tendon pain at the elbow is usually a loading problem rather than damage. The tendon has been asked to do more than it can currently tolerate, often after a change in work, sport or a repetitive task. It rarely settles with rest alone, because rest lowers capacity further.

How we treat it

We reduce the aggravating load, treat the tendon and the structures above it including the neck and shoulder where relevant, then progressively reload it so it tolerates what you need it to. Elbow tendons respond well, but they need the dosage set properly and tracked over time.

What it often feels like

  • Pain on the outside or inside of the elbow
  • Weak or painful grip
  • Aching after work, training or DIY
  • Tenderness to touch over the bony point
  • Pain lifting a full cup or kettle

Not sure if this is what you have? An initial assessment works that out before deciding how to treat it.
