Low back pain

Low back pain is the most common reason people come through the door. It can arrive suddenly, often doing something unremarkable like picking something up off the floor, or it can creep in over weeks until sitting, standing or sleeping all become uncomfortable.

What tends to cause it

Most low back pain is not caused by serious damage, even when it hurts a great deal. Scans often show changes that are common in people with no pain at all. What usually matters more is how the back, hips and trunk are moving and loading together, how much the tissue has been sensitised, and what has changed recently in your work, training or sleep.

How we treat it

We start by working out what is actually driving the pain and ruling out anything that needs referral. Treatment settles the irritated tissue with hands-on work, then rebuilds the strength and load tolerance that stops it recurring. You leave with a clear plan for what to do between appointments and what to expect week to week.

What it often feels like

  • A catch or grab when bending, lifting or twisting
  • Stiffness first thing in the morning that eases with movement
  • An ache that builds the longer you sit or stand
  • Pain that spreads into the buttock or down the leg
  • Difficulty straightening up after being bent over

Not sure if this is what you have? An initial assessment works that out before deciding how to treat it.
