Mid-back & thoracic pain

Pain through the mid-back and ribs is common in anyone who spends long periods seated or carrying load. It often feels stiff and dull between the shoulder blades, sometimes with a sharper catch when you twist or take a deep breath.

What tends to cause it

The thoracic spine is built for rotation, and it tends to lose it. Long hours in one position, heavy or repetitive lifting, and restriction through the rib joints all contribute. Breathing pattern plays a part too, particularly where tension has been building over a long period.

How we treat it

Treatment usually combines joint mobilisation through the thoracic spine and ribs with breathing and movement work to restore rotation and extension. We also look at what your day actually involves, because mid-back pain rarely settles for good without building the strength to tolerate it. Alongside the hands-on work, we load the muscles through the upper back and shoulder blades progressively so the area can handle the demands of your day rather than just feeling better on the table.

What it often feels like

  • A dull ache between or under the shoulder blades
  • Sharp pain with a deep breath, cough or sneeze
  • Stiffness turning to look behind you
  • Tightness that builds through a working day
  • Pain that travels around the ribs

Not sure if this is what you have? An initial assessment works that out before deciding how to treat it.
