Osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons for joint pain, particularly through the knees, hips, hands and spine. It usually means stiffness first thing in the morning, discomfort that builds with activity, and days that feel better or worse without an obvious reason.
Osteoarthritis involves changes to the cartilage and surrounding joint structures over time. It is not simply wear and tear, and the amount of change on a scan often has little to do with how much pain someone has. Strength, activity levels, body weight, sleep and overall health all influence how much it affects you.
Exercise is the most effective treatment we have for osteoarthritis, and strength work in particular. We settle the joint down with hands-on treatment, then build strength in the muscles supporting it so the joint tolerates more of what you want to do. For most people this means less pain and better function without needing surgery.
Not sure if this is what you have? An initial assessment works that out before deciding how to treat it.
